Goodbye, Sweet Ellie Girl

This morning we took our sweet Ellie to the vet for the very last time. We held her, loved on her, told her she was beautiful and perfect and the best dog ever born. Then we held her while she let go.

She had been doing really well, but Thursday took a turn for the worse, apparently injuring her leg while we were at work, and became unable to stand or walk.  Yesterday the vet confirmed what we feared.  We took her home for one last night to allow all three of us to say goodbye, then this morning made the very hard decision to do what we felt was best for our sweet Ellie.
Thirteen years ago Nick took me to the pound to pick out my birthday present.  She was nothing like the dog I thought I would pick, but when I held her for the first time she let out a deep sigh and put her head on my shoulder, and she was ours. It was instant love that lasted every single day from that moment until far beyond this heartbreaking one.
Good night, sweet girl.  You will forever be in our hearts, and we will miss you everyday.
Thank you for all the love.  Our lives were so much better because you were here to share it with us.

  1. Oh Sarah I am bawling at my computer. I'm so so sorry. She was so beautiful and so fortunate to have so much love in her lifetime. When I think of all of the dogs out there who are mistreated my heart swells even more for dogs who are as fortunate as Ellie to be cared for and loved in the way that you loved her. You were lucky to have her, and she was lucky to have you. Thinking of you and sending love from California.

  4. Long time reader, but I rarely comment. Pets are such special creatures and take up a special place in our hearts. They really are family. I'm so sorry for your loss. She was lucky to have wonderful owners who gave her a great life.
